Colombia news - Cartagena

85% of tourists that visited Cartagena at the end of 2010 and beginning of 2011 were satisfied with their visit to Colombia’s prime tourism destination, a recently released poll showed.

According to the fourth annual tourism satisfaction poll, held among 670 visitors at the local bus terminal, the airport and the cruise terminal, the visitors are mostly positive about the city’s wealth in historic sites, its beaches and the people.

The visitors’ main criticism was the garbage and smell of the city, the cost of their visit and the street vendors.

“There are a lot of issues that still need to be improved and can be improved,” Luis Ernesto Araujo, president of the Cartagena tourism corporation, told newspaper El Tiempo. The tourism representative said he was generally satisfied with the results of the poll.

According to the poll, 15.4% of the tourists arriving in Cartagena are from the United States.

Cartagena, famous for its colonial center, is Colombia’s second most popular travel destination after Bogota.
