Colombia news - TOlima

Colombian soccer side Deportes Tolima have caused an upset in the Copa Libertadores, beating Brazil’s Corinthians to advance to the group phase of South America’s biggest club tournament.

After drawing the first leg 0-0 in Sao Paulo, Tolima knew that any win would see them through to the group phase with Brazil losing one of its top candidates for the trophy.

And the Colombians took the lead in the 66th minute of the second leg, played in Ibague, as Danny Santoya directed the ball past goalkeeper Julio Cesar.

Another 12 minutes later, Wilder Medina added a second to give Tolima a more comfortable lead.

Corinthians were unable to change their situation, hindered by a red card to Peruvian substitute Luis Ramirez in the 72nd minute. The midfielder had entered the pitch only two minutes earlier.

Tolima advance to the group phase in which they face Estudiantes of Argentina, Paraguay’s Guarani and another Brazilian opponent, Cruzeiro. The other two Colombian teams in this tournament are Once Caldas and Junior.
