Bogota’s Catam military airbase used by the president and other officials will be moved over the next five years in order to expand the capital’s El Dorado International Airport.

“The aviation of the government and the army will be in another airport nearby … in Madrid, Cundinamarca,” President Juan Manuel Santos told members of the press on Friday.

“And eventually, within the next decade, we must build a new airport, another new airport, so that we can have the traffic and convert ourselves into what we have wanted to become, the real hub of Latin America,” Santos said.

According to the president, the transfer of the air force base will cost more than $1 billion.

Bogota’s El Dorado airport was recently ranked among the worst in the world according to online travel agency eDreams.
