Colombia news - rains Bogota

Bogota Mayor Samuel Moreno on Wednesday issued a state of yellow alert over the heavy rains that have caused several floods and landslides in Colombia’s capital.

“With this measure all local emergency committees in the 20 localities are activated and there will be a daily report on the 84 critical points in Bogota to attend any emergency as fast and as timely as possible,” the mayor said.

According to Moreno, the heavy rains have so far cost the lives of five Bogotanos, injured nine. Some 478 families have received aid from government agencies.

The mayor said that Bogota has not had rains this heavy since November 1973.

The prolonged rainy season has killed at least 128 people throughout Colombia and has caused the authorities of almost half the country’s municipalities to issue alerts.
